It has been quite some time since we had back to back one day games, and definitely a long time since it happened on weekdays. Sharjah and the VB Series in Australia were the places for back-to-back one day matches, but both are now things of the past, so it is interesting to see it happen now in Pakistan. And it’s only logical that a nation which has hasn’t had a chance to host a proper international cricket matches for months now does it. Surely Pakistan fans won’t be complaining about excess cricket.

Pakistan were convincing in their victory in the 1st ODI which happened earlier today/yesterday and completely outclassed Sri Lanka. Lanka started off well in their innings batting first, but after the openers got them off to a rollicking start they soon lost their way and managed to score just 219. Surely that was not a great score to defend, and the two Pakistani openers made Lanka’s task tougher by staying on together till the 38th over of their innings. In the end they won the match by 8 wickets with over 4 overs to spare.

Tomorrow, Sri Lanka will need to display stronger resilience and a better exhibition in the batting department if they are to give the hosts a fight. While the Lankan bowling looks okay, it is their batting which has been a bit of a letdown in the recent past. On the other hand, Pakistan batters looked in good nick and they definitely enter the 2nd odi as favourites. Will Lanka be able to pull off a surprise? Watch the match live tomorrow to know that.

Australia look more like the cricket team that we have known in the one day series than they did in the recently concluded test series. After narrowly losing the 1st one-dayer they came back well to clinch a cliffhanger at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart. Opener Marsh and skipper Rickey Ponting both scored half-centuries as Australia posed a respectable total of 249 which at the end proved just about enough. Boucher and Morkel did manage to create a scare at the fag end of the match but it was not enough as South Africa ended up losing the match by 5 runs.

Now Mitchell Johnson will be back in the Australian squad for the 3rd ODI at Sydney after having been rested for a while. He will replace debutant Ryan Harris who wasn’t exactly at his best in his maiden game at Hobart.

Another interesting facet to watch out for will be the use of the powerplays. Ponting doesn’t seem to have come to terms with it yet, and he will be keenly watched in this regard.

After a thrilling 4th innings chase by Bangladesh, the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh series has come alive. 2008 will now be remembered for the great 4th innings chases. First it was India against England, then the big one – South Africa chasing  over 400 to defeat Australia and then the heroic but tragic chase by Bangladesh. Sri Lanka would be relieved that they did not under-estimate Bangladesh and gave them a target of over 500. That Bangladesh would reach 413, and at one point over 400 for 7 would have definitely scared the wits out of the Lankan bowlers. Whenever Ashraful scores a ton, it is always a memorable match. Not to miss Shakib-Al-Hasan who is fast claiming a place of honours in world cricket.

Rain played spoilsport in the 1st ODI of the series between Newzealand and West Indies which was played at the Queenstown Events Centre on the last day of 2008. West Indies were precariously placed at 129/5 with less than 15 overs left in the match. Surely New Zealand would have cursed the rain gods more.

What a spectacle of great cricket this Australia-South Africa series has been! Two test matches so far, with both turing on their heads in the later half of the matches to produce stunning results. Of course, I know, we might not have all been so excited had the same turns in fortunes been in favour of Australia, but what the heck. It’s been too long now that Australia has dominated the world of cricket – so much so that it was beginning to get a little dull. I already look forward to the day not too distant in the future when I shall be backing Australia in the match – just imagine Australia going into a match as the underdogs!

The 3rd and the final cricket test of the series starts on the 3rd January at Sydney, and although Australia have already lost the series, there is a lot at stake. For one, Ponting and his men will pull all their might, though it is a much depleted might now, to ensure that the final scoreline does not read 3-0. Now that will be really bad. Ponting’s captaincy is at stake, even though he did well with the bat in the 2nd Test. Hayden’s place in the side might get seriously questioned were he to fall cheaply again. There is historic anticipation of a first ever whitewash of Australia at home – that will also topple Australia from the top of the ICC Cricket Ratings for Test Teams, and will catapult South Africa to the top. At best, Australia is now one of the top three teams in cricket – surely they are no longer invincible – South Africa and India are both vying for the top spot, and that will make 2009 an interesting year for test cricket.

What a test match this one is turning out to be? At the end of the 2nd day’s play in the South Africa – Australia Boxing Day Test at Melbourne yesterday, the match looked like it was already in Australia’s kitty. But so did the last test, didn’t it?

Well, things have changed now, and dramatically so. I am feeling like an idiot at having missed out on watching live cricket action this morning – even i didn’t have the wildest idea that cricket would be that exciting after what happened yesterday. South Africa were 7 down with still 200 behind, and this morning when the game started Hayden must have been raring to be back again on what still looked like a very good cricket wicket. But alas, when Hayden finally did walk in, it was with just 10 minutes to go before stumps!

One man- Duminy was primarily responsible for what Michael Clarke summed up in the evening as one of the most disappointing days for Australia Cricket in recent years. Batting with no.9, 10 and 11, Duminy was brilliant – scoring 166 and no less. With support from Steyn and the other bowlers, he not just wiped up the deficit but actually managed to get South Africa a handy 50+ runs lead.

With South Africa already 1-0 up in the series, the onus will now be on Australia to try and win the match, and therein will lie South Africa’s chance to go 2-0 up. Now that will really be something.
