The ICC Champions Trophy 2009 is turning out to be more interesting than it was planned to be. New Zealand and West Indies were supposed to be the weak links, one each in either group. New Zealand has already upset the Lankan applecart while the West Indies troubled the Pakistanis and almost threatened to win the match against Australia. England who got a 6-1 drubbing at home were written off as a non-entity in one day cricket but have been the revelation of the tournament. They first shocked Sri Lanka and yesterday sent the home team South Africa packing out of the tournament.
Will it be India’s turn today? India entered the tournament seeking to cement its place as the World’s No.1 team in one day cricket. But a defeat at the hands of Pakistan means that the India vs Australia match today at the Centurion will be a knock-out match for India. Australia might still get through even if they lose. Chances are that the team which wins today will be the team which makes it to the semi-final.

How can there be an India vs Pakistan match, and there not be enough drama? Pakistan began with a bang batting first in this all important match of the ICC Champions Trophy. But soon lost a couple of wickets, and when ther 3rd wicket fell soon enough, India looked like to be very firmly in the driver’s seat. But that was then. Pakistan is now well in control of the match - Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Yousuf have notched up a record 160+ runs partnership and that too yet unbeaten. 300 and more is definitely on the cards. Unless Tendulkar comes up with another vintage innings with able support from more than one batsmen, Pakistan may well turn out to be the winning team today.

After Day 1 of the deciding 5th and final Ashes Test, Australia might fancy that they have a slight advantage over the home team with the England score card reading 307/8. But the important question will be answered only later today - how far further can England push themselves? Stuart Broad is there at the crease with 28 and if he can get some support from no.10 and no.11, and they can get England to a score beyond 350, then I would like to thing that’s a very decent score and would even go to the extent of saying that the match is evenly poised. But if Australia can polish off those last two wickets cheaply, then they will definitely have an edge and if their batsmen can even get them a lead of 70-80 runs, then England might be on the backfoot in the second innings.
As of now the match is tantalisingly poised - watch the live streaming of the match as it starts later today, especially don’t miss the first hour which is going to be all important. If you are in the Star Cricket footprint, you can of course watch the match comfortably live on your TV sets.

Pakistan batted first in this all important match, and have piled up an impressive 170+ score against the Netherlands. Ideally they would have liked to get about 10 more and push the asking run rate for the Netherlands to in excess of 9 from the very beginning. But they shouldn’t be too disappointed with their effort with the bat.
Don’t forget that Pakistan don’t just need to win the match but need to restrict Netherlands to a score which will ensure that Pakistan’ts Run Rate is more than Netherland’s. The target for Pakistan now is to ensure that Netherlands are restricted to a score of 150 or less - that will ensure that Pakistan and England make it to the Super Eights. The best part is that Pakistan have the bowling fire power to rattle the Netherlands batsmen early on, and put them on the backfoot from the word go.

After the debacle of the home team in the inaugural fixture of the 2nd Twenty20 World Cup, India would be more than wary of Bangladesh. Unlike the dutch, the Bangladesh is a test side with more experience and quality, and in the T20 format of cricket, they have the firepower to surprise the bigger teams more regularly.
India have won the toss and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has elected to bat first, as was to expected. But I don’t think it’s a good decision against a team like Bangladesh who would have been chasing an imaginary high score had they batted first, given India’s reputation in Twenty20. Now, it is imperative that India get off to a good start and get to atleast 50 in the first 6 overs during the fielding restrictions. I think Bangladesh have the power to chase any score and the pressure is unnecessarily on the Indian batsmen now.

It was expected to be cakewalk for the Kiwis but after the England vs Netherlands match, New Zealand would better be careful. T20 Cricket is not like test cricket, and the difference in quality between teams is not as wide as it seems. Remember that a couple of good overs here and there can often change the course of a match, or a couple of excellent players can swing the fortunes of a match. An Ashraful 50 might not be enough for Bangladesh in a 50 overs match but in Twenty20, a half-century can make a hell lot of difference.
That said, New Zealand have a better T20 side than the home nation and in Daniel Vettori they have a captain with a sharp head on his shoulders. We may have seen an upset today, but I don’t forecast one for tomorrow. I think New Zealand should be able to crush Scotland with ease and secure themselves a spot in the next round. But then it’s T20 and one never knows - so watch the live streaming webcast of the match as it starts tomorrow to find out what exactly happens.

History awaits India tomorrow at Wellington. M S Dhoni’s team has taken complete control of the 3rd and Final test of the series. Either India should wrap up a comfortable victory or in the least draw the match. In both the cases, India will win the test series - an achievement that will come after almost thirty years!
Gautam Gambhir’s 2nd consecutive ton (167) and Laxman and Dravid’s fifties have propelled India to over 300 and they are already ahead by over 500 runs. Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni are still at the crease and five wickets still remain. Unless New Zealand can create a new world record for the highest ever 4th innings chase in the history of test cricket, India are safe.

The India vs New Zealand three test series is now poised interestingly. After the 1st test it looked like India would walk away comfortable winners. But the 2nd test has turned the series completely. When cricket begins on day 4 in Napier, it will India who will start with their back to the wall. And too much will depend on The Wall. Rahul Dravid looked good and solid in the 1st innnings and at one stage he and his favourite batting partner VVS Laxman were threatening to take back control of the match, but that didnt happen. Dravid is back at the crease, and if India are to harbour any hopes of saving this test Dravid will have to play a long innings.

The one day drubbing seems to have scarred the Kiwis psychollogically too - if you were watching the live telecast of the 1st test you would know what I am talking about. Right from the first session on the first day New Zealand looked like they had already given up. The only time they looked like giving a fight was when Jesse Ryder alongwith his captain were batting to give some respect to the New Zealand 1st innings score, else the match would not even hav gone to day 4.

India are definitely in control of the 1st Test now. The score is already 313/4 with Tendulkar fast inching towards yet another test century. Yuvraj Singh is giving him good company and Dhoni is yet to bat. If they can swell the lead to about 150, I don’t see how New Zealand can come back into the 1st test.
The ball is still doing a bit - as I write this Yuvraj Singh has got out misjudging a delivery outside his off-stump. He left the ball only to find the ball going on to disturb the timber. Even with a lead of 100, India should be well positioned to post their first test victory on New Zealand soil in the last 20 years!
